While we may forget sometimes, here is the truth: HR is not just about policies, paychecks, and paperwork. Done right, it’s about people, purpose, and driving real organizational change.

I didn’t always know I’d end up in Human Resources. Like many others, I stumbled into it. But over time, I realized HR was the perfect intersection of everything I cared about: leadership, strategy, communication, business, and making workplaces better for real people, not just shareholders.

The Path In

I started my HR journey supporting student employees and coordinating onboarding at a university. I didn’t have all the lingo down yet (FMLA, FTE, EEO) but I quickly learned that behind every acronym was a person trying to do their best work.

I asked questions. I listened. I learned. And over time, I built a reputation not just for “getting things done,” but for helping people feel seen and supported along the way.

That’s the part that still fuels me.

What I Love Most About HR

  1. You’re the bridge between people and impact.
Whether it’s coaching a manager, supporting someone through a tough life moment, or streamlining a process that used to waste hours, HR makes a real difference.
  2. You see the big picture.
HR has a hand in everything: culture, operations, leadership, strategy. You’re not siloed. You get to shape how the business runs and how people thrive inside it.
  3. You never stop learning.
Every day brings something new – tech, laws, team dynamics, growth plans. It keeps you sharp and humble at the same time.
  4. You get to be the human in Human Resources.
In a world increasingly automated and data-driven, empathy still matters. And HR is one of the few places where emotional intelligence is just as important as strategy.

Why You Should Consider HR

If you’re someone who wants to solve real problems, support people, and help organizations become places where people want to work, not just have to, you belong in HR.

It’s not always easy. But it’s always meaningful.

You’ll have the chance to grow others while growing yourself. You’ll be challenged to lead from behind the scenes and influence without a title. And if you lean in, you’ll earn a seat at the table where big decisions get made.

Final Thought

HR isn’t just a job, it’s a mission. A chance to humanize the workplace and shape the future of work.

If that excites you even a little, I encourage you to explore it. Read, ask questions, shadow someone in the field. The path into HR doesn’t have to be perfect, it just has to start.

And who knows? Maybe your story starts here too.
